Our client wanted to be able to work from home with a more effective use of space. They required a more user-friendly environment with a dedicated area for his work.

Often the difficulty people find with working from home is marking the boundary between work and home life. To a certain extent this division, or the lack of it, is psychological, but clearly making physical adjustments to available living space will help resolve the issue.

The house currently has an existing rear conservatory, within which the client normally works from home. However, this is also currently a communal play area for the children. The objective was to create a more private work area and a larger kitchen for the client while retaining the existing downstairs bathroom. The concept was to clearly define the boundaries of this new space while keeping it connected to the remainder of the house, in keeping with the client’s desire to be able to work privately, to be in the home but not at home.

Another key element of the brief was the proposed cost. The client was keen to work to a budget, which meant making the new rear extension economical but supremely functional.

Challenges

The designing of the extension was relatively straight forward, however the main challenge was in specifying the materials to tie in with the ‘old’ materials of the period property and the large steel beam bolted together.

The solution

Dans Architectural Services designed an extension to tie together all the existing features including the roof line seamlessly.

The Outcome

The extension achieved everything the clients desired, an additional single bedroom and a study room, with a large dining area off the kitchen. The clients were so

happy with the design and structure advice they received from Dans Architectural Services, which building control signed off

The clients wish was to create additional floor space to the ground floor of a residential dwelling for a large family. The clients desired an open plan kitchen configuration while still maintaining some form of separation for the living area and additional spaces. The proposed work was applied for under a house holder planning application and has now provided them with an enhanced standard of living.

Description - Proposed single storey rear extension, front and rear dormers, new bay windows

The clients wanted to change the style of this property. This had its challenges due to supporting the open-plan expanse to be created.

Challenges

To achieve the desired space the existing property needed reconfiguring and extending to provide a spacious kitchen, dining and lounge area. In opening up the interior space and losing the external wall across the full span of the house the extension needed to be carefully thought through to achieve the layout the clients required.

The Solution

Dan’s Architectural Services designed the extension spanning the rear of the property incorporating the necessary structural beams and columns to support a vaulted ceiling. The ground floor interior rooms were reconfigured to create a light and airy family living space.

The extension’s design and build was completed to the client’s total satisfaction. A fantastically large living space for all the family to enjoy.

The Outcome

Everything the clients had hoped for within the design of the extension had been achieved. A large open plan living space to cook, dine and relax had been created.
